Description : A wood model of a dog sled consisting of two runners, a basket of three wood planks, a backing and whittled driving bows (handles) that start in the middle of the sled rising and resting on the backing. Sinew runs along the outer planks and criss-crosses on the backing.
Fonctions : Before the Alaska Highway was built in 1942, dog sledding was the main mode of transportation during the winter. Dogs would be harnessed into the sled with a lead dog at the front. The driver would stand on the back holding the driving bows while luggage or passengers would sit in the front basket. Although the tradition began to wane with the onset of roads and airplanes, it has once again gained popularity through racing. One such famous race is the Yukon Quest, a race that is held annually with mushers racing from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska.
