Description : | A response to Edward Curtis's photograph 'Vision of a Vanishing Race.' In the late 1800's it was determined that Indian peoples would disappear forever. However, First Nations are still here despite past hardships that were placed upon them by Euro-Americans. (artist's statement, 3 Feb. 1997). "Curtis was dispatched by the U.S. government in the late 19th century to document what Euro-Americans then regarded as the 'dying' Native race. The benign indifference of this action mystified Shaw. The government obviously knew the survival of Native people was imperiled. But rather than implement programs to assist them in their struggle to adapt to changing conditions, it simply decided to commemmorate their culture for posterity. In her painting, she juxtaposes a copy of the black-and-white photo, which shows several seemingly disheartened Navajo Indians riding toward the distant horizon, with a full-color portrait of a proud Indian warrior on horseback. The dynamism of the latter image refutes the notion that Native people did, in fact die out. Instead, Shaw suggests, they are enjoying a cultural renaissance."
