Description : Like other prairie artists before her, Saskatoon artist Dorothy Knowles has sought to render the pictorial equivalent of seemingly infinite landscape space. She has worked closely, with mutual influence, alongside other landscape artists in the community, including Reta Cowley, David Alexander, and Greg Hardy. __The River__, an important early work, highlights her personal, delicate weave of texture and color in a light filled environment. Knowles celebrates the rich visual experience of a panoramic sweep of the landscape, taking a high viewpoint and lowering the horizon. Clouds and other atmospheric phenomena, realized with a playful freedom, are abstracted from literal description and fill the sky with virtual symphonic movement. (Matthew Teitelbaum, TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF COLLECTING, 1989, p.50).
