Description : | built on a wooden framework of flat paddles, it had a stationary middle paddle, held up at the nozzle end and secured at the back end to a wooden post set in the floor, the top and bottom paddles were moveable, hinging at the small end, accordian-like leather sides, closely nailed to the edges of the three paddles, created on airtight pair of chambers, a small valve in the middle paddle opened only on the upstroke of the lower paddle, which was moved by a chain attached to an overhead lever pole, a large stone placed on top of the bellows kept a constant pressure on the air in the upper chamber, as the lower chamber was squeezed shut, air was forced from it into the upper chamber, where, being under pressure of the stone weight, the valve closed and immediately trapped the air, the only exit was the nozzle |
