Description :	Portrait of William Douse. Oil on canvas stapled to a softwood stretcher; framed. Shows Douse seated in green upholstered chair with carved wooden flowers in front of a red backdrop. Douse is dressed in a black suit and is holding a book and cane.
Commentaires :	William Douse (1800-1864) was an influential and active Islander. During his life he fathered 13 children and still found time to be a politician, importer, land agent, ship builder, and make 49 transatlantic crossings. The anonymous artist responsible for this portrait was quite charitable as he appears to have trimmed Douse's 390 pounds somewhat.
