Description : Book-shaped box with hinged lid; reproduction of a circa 1800 painting behind glass inside lid; two drawers with brass ring pulls at lower front; two interior lidded on small metal hinges compartments inside flank a lid backed by a mirror which lifts to reveal five small compartments; lock has ward key; exterior entirely covered by strips of straw dyed green, red, yellow, and brown in a geometric and mosaic patterns.
Commentaires : This jewellery box was acquired by Mrs. Irma White from relatives living in Dorchester, N.B. and was originally thought to have been made by inmates of Dorchester Penitentiary; however, the box pre-dates the penitentiary which opened in 1880. Another possibility is that the box was made by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). Other very similar boxes can be dated to this period.
