Résumé
The history of museum climate guidelines is developed through three overlapping strands: awareness of problems, doing something about them, and the slow development of the science. Topics covered are nineteenth-century discoveries of climate issues; the history of passive RH control and its science, the emergence of mechanical systems, and the logic of best available technology; the emergence of stringent specifications; an era of relaxation; the emergence of current specifications; a critical history of the science; and the five errors of argumentation about specifications. The conclusions offer a brief recipe for action for institutions making decisions on this topic.
