Notes
  • Harvesting Traditional Knowledge is a two-way learning platform that brings Australian Indigenous traditional knowledge masters together with conservators from Australian cultural institutions to share difference approaches to caring for cultural material.
  • The project was delivered as four workshops held at remote Aboriginal-owned community Art Centres in Northern Australia. Indigenous film crew, The Mulka Project, produced this documentary film and DVD about the project.
  • The film shows the demonstration and sharing of practices between senior traditional knowledge holders from Buku Larnggay Mulka Art Centre, Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, and Mowanjum Arts and Culture Centre, Kimberley, Western Australia. This includes bark and ochre harvesting, gathering and production of natural fibres for woven objects, and production of traditional tools such as hair and reed brushes, spears and boomerangs. Specialists from major museums and art institutions in Australia, where many important cultural objects are kept, join the knowledge exchange to explain and explore conservation techniques.
