- The parish of Saint-Grégoire in Bécancour, Québec, owns a wooden tabernacle carved in the early 18t1 century (c. 1702), possibly by Charles Chaboulié, a French sculptor who immigrated to New-France in 1680. Because of its iconography, style and rich ornaments, this singular work of art stands apart within the history of early Quebecois sculpture. Some art historians have been interested in this unique piece, but so far, no thorough scientific analysis has been carried out and a certain confusion still surrounds several aspects of its history, especially regarding the way it may have been modified in the 19th century. In order to clarify these aspects and in the hope of adding to the knowledge of early Canadian art history, this research project first summarized the current state of the knowledge that is known about this tabernacle and then added to that knowledge by carrying out a study of the wood substrate and the layered structure of the tabernacle’s finishes. Twelve samples of wood and eighteen samples of coating were prepared into cross sections for microscopic analysis. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy with Electron Detector Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) were used to identify the gilding components, pigments and binders in the coating layers. The results of these investigations were then compared with relevant literature in order to confirm or refute the information found in these sources.
