- Résumé
- The American art museum, born in the nineteenth century, was understood from its beginnings to define the American nation as an advancing culture, one rich in the art collected and in the means of sharing its treasures with all the people. The democratic and capitalistic underpinnings of the museum created an institution sometimes at odds with itself: the holdings were of rarefied nature, precious, even spiritual, and required a certain level of knowledge for full appreciation. The contradictions and conflicts arising from this situation are the subject of this book.
