- Résumé
- The objective of this research project is to qualitatively determine the type of solvent with the lowest polarity that will successfully remove non-volatile residues from a characterized historical oil painting, after the application of a specific solvent gel. The specific solvent used will be of lesser polarity than that of the solvent used as the basis for the solvent gel. The solvent gel used will be an ethanol gel, using a formulation developed by Richard Wolbers. The experiment will follow typical procedures of application and removal as performed by conservators. Semiquantitative analysis of the samples will be conducted with diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (D.R.-F.T.I.R) and transmission FTIR Non-volatile residues of the solvent gel were satisfactorily removed with solvents of lesser polarity, namely isopropanol and isooctane. A very minute amount of Ethomeen C-25 (or its lower homologues) and/or Carbopol 934 remained on the painting after rinsing with 3-4 passes of a singular solvent.
