- Résumé
- Since time immemorial, the technique of oil painting has been closely linked to the use of additives to improve the drying properties. The historic written sources on ancient paint technology show that the artists possessed an enormous empirical knowledge in this respect. This review article describes the historical use (14-18th century) of lead oxide, alum, white vitriol, pumice, bone ash and venetian glass as driers. The historical extraction and trade of these raw materials are described. In addition, the aspect of raw material quality is addressed. Finally, the principle of action of these respective materials as siccatives for oils and oil varnishes is discussed.
- Notes
- This overview is a translation of a three-part article written in German and will be published in the Journal of Art Technology and Conservation in 2022, including some additions. The translation of the recipe texts was done analogously and should not be understood as linguistic editing. The historical recipes can be found in the appendix of each text section. The majority of the research refers to German-language historical sources.
