- Résumé
- The method in this report consists of placing a sheet of acidic paper between sheets of paper containing calcium carbonate, humidifying these sheets and then subjecting them to high pressure. Enough moisture is present in the system to allow for migration of the calcium carbonate into the acidic paper, neutralizing the acids present. It holds much promise as a way of neutralizing acids in papers bearing solvent-sensitive media. The goals of this research project were to determine if this conservation treatment can be successfully conducted using the low-tech equipment available in the average small conservation laboratory, and if non-destructive pH testing methods can indicate with reasonable accuracy when neutralization of acids has occurred. The trials conducted confirrned that the pH of acidic paper could be raised by using this new method, and that the pH changes can be monitored with reasonable reliability by non-destructive methods.
