Résumé
Despite of the popularity of the lining adhesive BEVA 371 Film, very limited quantitative information was available on the bond strengths produced under various lining conditions. To achieve a better understanding of the behavior of BEVA film and to provide a predictable framework, a wide range of lining systems were reproduced and peel tested. The variables were three lining temperatures, one and two layers of BEVA, two lining times, lining fabrics impregnated or not with BEVA film on the hot table before lining the paintings, and two lining fabrics (unimpregnated polyester sailcloth and woven French polyester). The results show that peel strength increases considerably with temperature, thickness of film and lining time, and decreases with impregnation. In general, acceptable bonds could not be achieved at 60c and bonds at70c were too strong.
