Résumé
[This volume] is a concise but comprehensive survey in which [Canadian Indigenous arts] are presented and studied in their historic and geographic contexts. The time and space to be covered in such a work are awesome. Included are the works by the hunters and farmers of the eastern woodlands, the horsemen of the prairies, the peoples of western arctic and plateau, the peoples of the western coast, and the Eskimo of the Arctic. There are more than 70 full-page illustrations, many in full colour. Not only are the major masterpieces from museum collections presented, but there are also photographs of objects, places and people in their specific surroundings. Indeed, the span of the material is such that the author treats a shaman's tiny amulets (which can be held in the hand) as well as huge boulder arrangements (which cannot be seen fully except from the air). Garments, architectural structures, sculptures, heraldic displays, masks, paintings, weapons, vessels, tools, magical and sacred artefacts are all displayed and described. Professor Patterson's text has been drawn from the early ethnographies, historical assessments, studies of modern changes, and contemporary interpretive essays. In layman's language, she describes the movements of peoples, the stylistic influences, the effects of contact with European newcomers - always maintaining a careful balance between the illustrations and her perceptive discussion.
