Résumé
The nature of acrylic paint makes cleaning acrylic paintings a complicated and difficult matter. Possible alternatives to the more traditional cleaning methods commonly associated with oil paintings have been suggested by conservators. These methods include using sponges and erasers to remove any surface debris; however, sponges and erasers can be abrasive and mechanically damaging to the paint surface. The goal of this research project is to analyze how mechanically and visually damaging cleaning with Absorene dirt erasers, grated Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser, Absorene latex cosmetic sponges, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are to acrylic paint films on canvas, masonite, and a blanket. In addition to examining the micro-abrasion caused by cleaning methods, the role the support the acrylic paint is on and the role that the size of the pigment particles plays in influencing the amount of damage caused during cleaning will be analyzed. The paints that will be tested are: Golden titanium dioxide white acrylic paint with its large pigment particles and Golden phthalocyanine green acrylic paint with its small pigment particles. Methods of scientific analysis that will be utilized to analyze the surface alterations and visual changes in color and gloss include the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a Minolta Chroma Meter colorimeter, and BYK-Gardner micro-TRI gloss glossmeter.
