- Résumé
- Two commercially available photosensitive adhesives are examined in order to establish their appropriateness for use in the conservation of glass. Loctite 3492 and Holdtite ST3222 were tested to determine their tensile strength, stability and reversibility. The effect which coloured glass has on the transmission of UV radiation, and subsequently the cure rates of these two adhesives, was also examined. In order to establish a relevant comparative analysis of different adhesive systems, the same experimental methodology was also applied to Hxtal NYL-1, a two-part epoxy adhesive currently favored for glass repair due to its high strength and resistance to yellowing. Tensile strength testing, conducted using an Instron machine, revealed the two photosensitive adhesives to be stronger than Hxtal NYL-1. While this level of strength remained unchanged after exposure to extended periods of ultraviolet radiation, both Loctite 3492 and Holdtite ST3222 experienced notable discolouration after UV exposure.
