Résumé
Through the critical analysis of a series of case studies, this dissertation examines approaches to the restoration of damaged paintings when the damage itself carries some kind of cultural or historical significance. The case studies focus on works of art that have been purposely mutilated in political and social conflicts, or in individually-motivated attacks, as well as paintings that were accidentally damaged in traumatic events such as war or natural disaster.
