Résumé
The focus of this research is the analysis of a distinctive dark patina on a select group of Egyptian bronzes in the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) collection. Dark patinas are not uncommon on archaeological bronzes; however, careful examination of these objects from the ROM collection reveals subtle differences in colour and texture between their patina and that of other objects. These discrepancies have raised the question of the authenticity of the patina. It is possible that the differences in appearance are due to some form of modern cleaning and re-patination treatment. The purpose of this project was to determine the authenticity of the patina by establishing both its composition and the process by which this layer was formed on the surface of the objects. A cross section sample from one artifact was analysed using optical, metallurgical, and scanning electron microscopy in order to clarify the relationship between the patina layer and the body metal.
