- Résumé
- Butvar B-98 is a polyvinyl butyral resin manufactured by the Monsanto Chemical Company. Studies published since 1981 have shown that Butvar B-98 fulfills many of the criteria necessary for a conservation quality wood consolidant. However, few studies have been published with respect to the long-term stability of Butvar B-98. To investigate the stability of Butvar B-98 the resin was cast in films on glass microscope slides and was subjected to intense exposure to heat and a relative humidity in an environmental chamber, as well as intense exposure to long-wave ultraviolet radiation under an ultraviolet lamp. The resin films were then examined for indications of chemical change with an infrared spectrometer and compared to the spectrum of an untreated Butvar B-98 control film. The physical characteristics of the exposed films were also measured against a control group in order to determine if there were any changes in color, hardness and solubility.
