Résumé
A remote environmental sensing system set up in Atlantic Provinces of Canada is examined. The system's role in collection management is given along with pros and cons. A broad history of preventive conservation and its entry to museums' collection management systems is presented. The general use of computers in museums, preventive conservation and ultimately in environmental monitoring is reviewed. The comparison between manual and computerised environmental monitoring systems is made. A survey circulated amongst the collection managers of related sites is presented to give a broad view of practical use of the system. The collection management directives regarding the conservation section are reviewed. Finally, future challenges in conservation, in general, are given along with ethics and the conservation profession concerned.
