Résumé
  • The painting, Nu Féminin (1967), by Montréal artist Jodi Smith (1907-2005), is in very poor condition, undergoing severe cupping, tenting, and complete delamination affecting the entire paint surface. The problem is occurring at the interface between a thick white ground layer and a thinner white ground that remains on the canvas, The primary objective of this research was to analyze and identify the materials used by the artist, to determine the factors contributing to this delamination. Zinc soaps were proposed as a possible cause.
  • The painting was analyzed with X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), polarized light microscopy (PLM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, using attentuated total reflectance (ATR-FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Archival and museum research was used to gain further information on the artists' materials and techniques and the conservation issues present in her other works.
  • Analysis found that the ground layers did not contain zinc oxide, but were composed primarily of titanium white and kaolin; however, XRF analyses taken at the delamination interface found zinc on the bottom surface of delaminating flakes. This may be indicative of a thin layer of zinc soaps, which has migrated through the paint ayer. Although not a major component of the ground layers, zinc is present in most paint layers, and zinc soaps were found at the interface of some paint layers which are subject to more minor delamination. Archival research showed that the artist often reworked or reused her canvases, which may explain the complex layered structure observed.
