Résumé
The objective of this research was to measure the acidity of a mid-nineteenth century book published in 1851, to determine the pH levels present in the pages and binding materials and to map the patterns of distribution thus formed throughout the textblock. Also, the fibre content of the pages and binding materials were identified using the polarizing light microscope and the presence of lignin, protein, alum/rosin size, starch, and carbonates were determined using microchemical and spot tests. The relationships of these results to the possible origins and causes of the pH patterns revealed are evaluated and discussed.
