Résumé
The focus of this research is a combined technical and art historical examination of the pigments, painting structure and pentimenti found in an oil painting portraying lamentation of Christ, traditionally attributed to Cornelis Schut the Elder (1597-1655). The painting has a strikingly similar representation of the dead Christ with Mary and St. John in Die Beweinung Christi durch Maria and Johannes, of c. 1614/15 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, by Peter Paul Rubens. Some historical research will be undertaken including stylistic analysis to place the painting within an art historical framework. The study will investigate what kind of copy this particular painting is as the art historians present a possibility that it is a workshop copy. A comparative work will include investigation of Rubens's workshop and Rubens's School as well as the analysis of Cornelis Schut's oeuvre.
