- Résumé
- Addresses the following topics: the original appearance of a painting based on the selection of art materials; the artist's intent expressed by carefully selected examples of glazing, scumbling and 'alla prima' techniques in paintings by well known artists of the 19th century, primarily from the French tradition with a few examples from the English and Swiss schools; the use of varnish, as a final coating, or as an integrated layer in the painting structure; or the absence of varnish, in the case where no varnish was used at all nor desired in the creation of the work of art; and lastly but equally important is the environment in which a painting is presented, which means the quality and direction of light sources as well as the colour of the walls behind the paintings. Literary references are cited when possible from documents written by the artists themselves or informed contemporary figures, such as J.H. Füssli, Degas, Delacroix, Daubigny, Reynolds, Corot, Couture, Gauguin, Manet, zola ..
