Résumé
In many museums around the world, collections are stored in such poor conditions that it is not possible to perform even the most basic tasks, such as documentation, retrieval or research, let alone develop exhibitions. By applying the RE-ORG method, developed by ICCROM and UNESCO in 2009–11, it has been possible to change this situation in more than 40 museums in 12 countries, reorganizing storage spaces and collections, and strengthening the self-confidence of staff. This paper presents the lessons learnt across those various cases. It discusses essential aspects of the preparation and planning of the reorganization project, data collection, and teamwork. It identifies critical moments during the implementation phase. It proposes ways to resolve space distribution and to arrange furnishings and collections. Common sense and focus, teamwork and leadership, a methodical approach, and an attention to reducing waste and cost were the key factors for the success of each project.
