Résumé
  • The subject of this publication concerns problems in operative conservation of Swedish wooden artefacts with japanned surfaces, mainly furniture but also smaller artefacts such as frames, boxes
  • and cases. Japanning is originally an English term used to denote European imitations of the oriental counterpart - urushi wares or true lacquer. The term japanned is used to describe a variety of similarly looking European coating techniques aiming to render gloss, colour, and relief covering all the surfaces of a substrate, and resembling
  • of the oriental artefacts made with urushi sap. The intention of this publication, is to present and discuss current perspectives on the deterioration of coatings on japanned artefacts, and alternatives for their preservation, as well as to examine the present state of condition of several objects in Swedish public collections.
