Résumé
According to Richard Buck's hypothesis, many cycles of relative humidity cause the permanent convex warpage, which very often accompanies old panel paintings. The author of this paper observed that after the traditional preparation of wooden panels (gesso ground only on one side), they develop a convex warp within weeks and never recover; the convex warp becomes permanent. This observation suggests that high R.H., that is high moisture content, which is introduced into the panel with the gesso, is more damaging than a constant low R.H. (although high R.H. cannot create convex warp, at least theoretically.) It also suggests that the development of permanent warpage of painted panels can take place without so many cydes. Oak, linden and pine samples were painted with alkyd paint on the front and wax-resin mixture on the two sides. The back of the panels was left unprotected. These samples were installed into controlled humidity chambers and exposed to different hurnidity levels.
