- Résumé
- The book begins with an account of the Temeraire herself, against the background of the wars with France, and examines the sentimental appeal of men-of-war as the wooden walls of old England. In the second part the author concentrates on Turner, his observation of the sea, sailing-ships and steamboats, his images of contemporary Britain, his treatment of skies and sunsets in different media and his impulse towards poetry. In the final part Egerton investigates how in the Fighting Temeraire, Turner transformed prosaic reality into evocative poetry, freely adapting facts to creat a memorable image.
