- In December 1998, fourty-four governments and thirteen NGOs endorsed the Principles of the Washington Conference with Respect to Nazi-Confiscated Art. In the Statement by the Federal Government, the Laender (federal states) and the national associations of local authorities on the tracing and return of Nazi-confiscated art, especially from Jewish property, those responsible in Germany in 1999 emphasized their commitment to these principles. To the present day, the issue of tracing and returning Nazi-looted art is an undiminished challenge for the institutions concerned.
