Résumé
Wall paintings created on external walls can be at great risk to disfigurement and deterioration. Soluble salts can originate from a variety of sources, including building materials and pollutants, and can pose a particular threat to these paintings. Excess moisture can encourage the migration of these salts through the layers of the painting toward the surface resulting in areas of fluorescence and subfluorescence. As a result, encrustations may then form on the surface or the surface may become powdery. Crystallization of these salts can also result in increases in volume and pressure within the painting that can lead to additional deterioration. This research project will utilize abrasive techniques and poultices to examine and compare the resulting surface of the wall painting. The aim of this experiment is to test these two removal techniques for two important qualities. The first quality is the initial effect on the surface and the second is the long-term effect of the removal technique.
