Résumé
The purpose of this research project was to develop an artists' paper for combination Iris (a.k.a. giclée) printing and intaglio which possessed the appearance of age while retaining superior mechanical qualities. A proposed system for creating an artificial appearance of age would exploit the tendencies of certain sizing agents to discolour over time. Sodium alginate has been observed to discolour under accelerated aging tests, however, papers sized with sodium alginate retain advantages in mechanical properties. In this experiment, Arches paper was sized with a solution of sodium alginate and samples were submitted to elevated heat topromote discoloration. Conventional artificial aging methods were then used to compare the treated samples with controls.
