- Ce mémoire porte sur l’étude et la restauration des vernis de lutherie. Elle est basée sur le Violoncelle Irrégulier de Thomas Zach, datant de 1872, et appartenant au Musée de la Musique à Paris. Le vernis original de cet instrument a été restauré par un élève de la spécialité peinture, à l’occasion de sa dernière année d’étude à l’Institut National du Patrimoine à Paris. Cet instrument est de facture expérimentale, et a été présenté à ce titre à l’exposition universelle à Vienne en 1873. Il fait partie d’un ensemble de sept instruments, commandés par le prince moldave Grigore Sturdza, dont l’intégralité se trouve aujourd’hui dans les collections du Musée de la Musique. L’intervention se base sur une étude poussée des valeurs patrimoniales qui peuvent être attribuées à l’instrument et plus particulièrement à son vernis. Elle vise à redonner une unité visuelle au vernis, à la fois très encrassé et lacunaire, tout en respectant l’intégrité de la matière originale et en apportant le moins possible de matériaux extérieurs. Cette étude vise à comprendre les interventions réalisées dans le monde de la lutherie et à proposer une alternative pour des instruments conservés dans un contexte muséal. Elle comprend une recherche sur les matériaux les plus adaptés à la réintégration de couches picturales transparentes, incluant la sélection de matériaux colorants (colorants, pigments) stables et transparents, et la mise au point de vernis de retouche gélifiés pour permettre le comblement des lacunes.
- This thesis deals with the study and conservation of a lute-making varnish, on the basis of the experimental cello of Thomas Zach, 1872, belonging to the collections of the Museum of Music in Paris. The original varnish of this instrument has been restored by a student from the painting section, during her last year of study at the Institut National du Patrimoine in Paris. This instrument was showed at the Universal Exhibition of Vienna in 1873. It belongs to a group of seven instruments, ordered by the Moldavian Prince Grigore Sturdza. They are all conserved in the collections of the Museum of Music. The intervention is based on an advanced study of heritage values which can be attributed to the instrument and its varnish. It aims to give a visual unity to the varnish, which has a lot of dust and grime, embedded in the varnish, and a lot of losses. This intervention must preserve the original varnish and avoid as much as possible the input of any external conservation materials on the surface. This study helps to understand the usual interventions done in private lute making restoration, and proposes an alternative for the instruments conserved in a museum. It includes a research on materials adapted to the retouching of transparent coatings, a selection of stable and transparent pigments and colorants, and the transformation of retouching synthetic varnishes into a gel, to fill the losses.
