- The research focused on acquiring a deeper understanding of the history, aesthetics, and technology of reverse paintings on glass in order to inform the conservation treatment of the two works of art. The alteration phenomena of reverse paintings on glass are overviewed (surface alterations, breaks and losses to the glass support, glass corrosion, past restorations), as well as the different available treatments for the stabilization of detaching paint layers (consolidation with solutions and dispersions, reactivation of binding media, thermoplastic consolidants). A comparative study of several wax-resin based fixatives allowed for the selection of the most appropriate mixture for the treatment of works with highly soluble painted surfaces. Additional research into the long term stability of such adhesives is needed. Future directions include the introduction of stabilizers and the study of different proportions of wax-resin mixtures.
