Résumé
In this study, the occurrence of highly disfiguring degradation processes, recently proposed by researchers in Germany to be threatening Egyptian Blue pigment layers, was investigated. Cross-sectional samples of paint layers containing the synthetic pigment Egyptian Blue were taken from a small, diverse group of objects in the Egyptian collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. These were analyzed using reflected light microscopy as well as an electron beam microprobe with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) fluorescence system and back-scattered electron (BSE) detector. Microstructures and phase interactions were examined and qualitative analysis was performed. Several observations were made that may coincide with the findings of the earlier researchers, with four types of potential deterioration noted during the analyses. The findings indicate that these proposed processes may be widespread throughout a variety of museum collections.
