- Résumé
- During an exhibition of work by Canadian artist Paterson Ewen at the Art Gallery of Ontario, thirteen works of art on paper were monitored for colour change with a portable tristimulus chroma meter and the data were analyzed using the CIELAB colour space system. This paper discusses the results of monitoring the works for twenty-four weeks while being displayed under generally accepted exhibition conditions of 50 lux lighting in a stable environrnent. The different types of paper support and media showed a wide variety of tolerances to light exposure, with some showing no significant colour change, while others darkened or lightened noticeably. These results suggest that institutions should consider reevaluating their light exposure policies for works of art on paper, since colour change can take place more rapidly than expected under ideal gallery conditions and a uniform set of guidelines may prove inadequate for the variety of papers contained in many collections.
