- Résumé
- Pigments and binding media from 1,346 samples from historic Native objects were analyzed at the Canadian Conservation Institute by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray energy spectrometry combined with scanning electron microscopy, and, when required, by x-ray diffraction or polarized light microscopy. The frequency and, where possible, the period of occurrence of each pigment was assessed by region or by tribe, mainly from the Plains, Naskapi, Haida, Kwakiutl, Tsimshian, and the group of tribes from the Northwest Coast. Fillers, extenders, and media were also identified. A database was compiled with artifact documentation (accession number, description, tribe, collector), analytical information (elements, medium, pigments), date the artifact was collected, date the artifact was acquired, and date attributed to the artifact by a curator. It is hoped that information from the Native materials database will be used by others to elicit information for their specific requirements. The report gives 22 references to the data presented, 36 literature references to ethnographic pigments, and 36 other general references. -- AATA
