Résumé
This research examines the painting materials and techniques of Maurice Galbraith Cullen. Cullen is a twentieth century Canadian artist (1866-1934) who brought a new vision to the history of Canadian landscape by adopting and modifying the French impressionism technique. The Agnes Etherington Art Center in Kingston provided four paintings; two of the paintings, entitled Study, were done in oils on canvas and the other two paintings, entitled The Quebec Ferry and Sketch for “Spring Break-up at Beaupré” were made with oil on wood panel. The paintings were examined using normal illumination, microscope, ultraviolet and infrared radiation. The aim of this research was to study the artist’s painting techniques and to identify the materials in two of the paintings which were then compared with information found in the literature regarding the materials and techniques used by Cullen. Samples of wood supports, canvas fibers, grounds, and paint layers, as well as varnish and paint cross-sections were extracted from Study and Sketch for “Spring Break-up at Beaupré” and underwent scientific analysis. The samples were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmitted and reflected light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray (SEM/EDX). The results from this research project confirmed the accuracy of the information found in the literature concerning the techniques and materials used by the painter Cullen.
