- Résumé
- Blotters are used extensively by paper conservators in various kinds of treatments. Some of these blotters contain optical brighteners, which can solubilize in water and other solvents. Because blotters are in close contact with paper objects during treatments, which often involve water, there is the possibility that some of the optical brightener could migrate into the paper object. The transferred brightener may cause accelerated deterioration in the paper object by increasing its potential for photo-oxidative degradation. By testing whether optical brighteners are transferred to the paper objects during treatment, and if so their effect on the aging of the object, the suitability of the use of these blotters in the paper conservation field was determined.
