- A simple, rapid method is described for the identification of pigments in paper coatings utilizing generally available infrared spectrometric instrumentation. Samples are scraped from the surface of coated papers and incorporated into 13mm KBr discs which are analysed qualitatively using infrared transmission spectroscopy. The analysis depends on visual comparison of the sample spectra with reference spectra of known pigments, binders and other materials. The method is illustrated by studying examples of coatings removed from a wide variety of paper products.
