Résumé
A study of fourteen corrosion samples removed from copper alloy artifacts excavated from the Late Bronze Age shipwreck at Uluburun, Turkey was completed. This report presents, first, an introduction to the Uluburun shipwreck, site conditions, and corrosion in seawater. Next the methodology followed in this investigation, which included, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, glancing angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/electron dispersive spectroscopy, and microprobe / electron dispersive spectroscopy is reviewed. Finally, the identification of a rare MgSn(OH)6 mineral called schoenfliesite in the majority of the samples, the identification of the more common CaC03 mineral aragonite, and the possibility that the objects have undergone dealloying are presented and discussed.
