Résumé
The National Trust of Australia and Heritage Victoria register the Ballarat Avenue of Honour for its heritage value and level of cultural significance. The Leaded Gunmetal (LG2) bronze plaques along the Avenue are exposed to environmental conditions and pollutants causing corrosion. The aim of the study is to determine the potential impact of plant herbicide use on the rate of deterioration and overall condition of outdoor plaques and sculptures. To aid this investigation, both invasive and non-invasive analysis was conducted. Two different herbicides were applied to LG2 sample tokens, which were placed under varying controlled environmental conditions for 28 days. Non-invasive analysis included a condition report of the plaques and interviews with local horticultural professionals. Chemical and physical changes to the LG2 tokens have been determined based on visual observation; optical microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results indicate changes to the condition of the herbicides combined with the metal, after 28 days of accelerated ageing. An additional analysis identifies the corrosion product on an original 1934 plaque, using scanning electron microscopy. The study will inform conservation professionals, historians, curators, artists and government bodies on the impact of herbicides on outdoor bronze objects.
