Résumé
"Iron gall ink. Three rather simple words used to describe a vast assortment of historic and modern inks. At first glance, these inks are quite straightforward: mix an iron-containing salt and a tannin source in a solvent like water or wine and adjust the viscosity with gum arabic. Voila! You've created dark purple-black ink that will shift as it ages to a range of rich browns. This colour shift, however, hints that the chemistry of these inks is complicated. Indeed, these inks and their degradation on paper substrates (let alone parchment or vellum) have been under intense investigation for more than 100 years."
