Résumé
The history of gilded leathers and their methods of manufacture are described. The items being treated are outlined (calfskin) - the design, paint layer, date and possible provenance (French or Flemish, beginning of the 18th century) and conservation condition. Possible treatments are suggested: reattachment and cleaning of paint layer, dressing and softening, infilling of losses, repair of tears, and mounting of panels. A study on possible softening materials follows, including practical testing carried out. Finally the restoration actually carried out is described.
