Résumé
Certain birch bark scrolls were prepared by stripping sheets of outer bark lengthwise from the tree (betula papyrifera) and not, as is usual, from around its circumference. End sticks were then fixed along both short axes. This type of scroll is under considerable strain because it tends to roll in on itself, with the paper side in, forming cracks-splits along the mid-portions of the scroll. A rigid support system, to support the entire surface, was produced using an epoxy resin with phenolic microballoon filler. Details are given, with diagrams of the cast preparation of the underside.
