Résumé
This article describes and illustrates the treatment of a North West Coast Indian (possibly Tlingit) basket which was structurally damaged and torn in many areas along the top portion of its vertical wall. A temporary support was made to secure the weakened basket and to allow access to both surfaces of its wall during treatment. The treatment consisted in: humidification of the basket; support and reshaping of the wall; alignment of the broken fibres; and repair of the breaks using twisted Japanese paper strands adhered with starch paste.
Cet article décrit et illustre le traitement d’un panier amérindien de la côte du Pacifique, possiblement d’origine Tlingit, qui comportait de nombreux bris sur sa paroi supérieure et des dommages structurels importants. Un support temporaire a été construit pour soutenir le panier et pour faciliter l’accès aux deux côtés de la paroi durant le traitement. Les diverses étapes du traitement ont été les suivantes : humidification du panier; support et redressement de la paroi; alignement des montants et des brins; et réparation en utilisant des torsades de papier japon collées à l’aide de pâte d’amidon.
