Résumé
Acid migration has often been assumed to be the cause of the discolouration of paper that has been in contact with acidic materials. More recently, Shahani proposed that volatile, acidic degradation products are generated during artificial ageing of paper. These compounds accumulate in paper stacks since they are unable to escape into the environment, therefore accelerating the degradation in the centre of a paper stack.
