- This is a 12-month contract position made available through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. Candidates must meet program eligibility requirements.
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing an exhibit and related programming that tells local history from a First Nations perspective. Working alongside our community partners, she/he will ensure that museum policies, exhibits and programming are representative, inclusive and respectful of First Nations culture.
The incumbent routinely carries out the duties under the supervision of the Museum Superintendent.
The intern, using established museum practices and guided by education and community policies, will work alongside our community partners (First Nation communities, educators) as we determine how the story is best told, what format it should take, how best to market and engage the wider community, and what outcomes we should expect. The intern will begin by familiarizing herself with the community and our partners. He/She will dialogue with elders and educators. With input from stakeholders, he/she will develop an exhibit and related programming that will create a clearer understanding of our past with the idea of finding a better way forward together - toward reconciliation.
In addition, intern will actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day culture of administering a community museum, including exhibit design and creation, research, interacting with visitors, managing the collection, attending all meetings, and participating in the writing of grants.
Candidate must be a university or college graduate who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. This position will provide first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study.
Candidate will have a degree or diploma in the heritage field, or equivalent education and related experience in education, indigenous studies or community outreach.
Must demonstrate the ability to work independently without direct supervision.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills a necessity.
The incumbent is required to work on a regular schedule as approved by the Museum Superintendent. No additional hours are generated.
