INVITATION
You are invited to the 2003 INTERCOM Conference to be held in Australia's capital, Canberra. The nation's capital is an outstanding place to visit, being the seat of government and the location of most of Australia's major national cultural institutions, such as the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Library of Australia and the Australian War Memorial.
All members of ICOM are invited to attend and participate in the Conference. A warm invitation is also extended to all members of Museums Australia and to all colleagues in museums and galleries around Australia and New Zealand.

THEME
In recent years there has been unprecedented building and redevelopment programs in the museum and gallery sector. Some have been major 'greenfields' developments: others have been programs of renewal while the institution continued to operate.
This conference seeks to examine how such projects can be managed effectively, while delivering quality outcomes within the restraints of budget and time.
| At some time in their careers, all museum and gallery professionals will be involved in such a project. They are challenging and demanding and a failure to achieve, and a disappointment by the public with the outcome, can materially affect the standing of the institution for many years afterwards. |
This will be a stimulating two day conference drawing on recent practical experiences in both small and major institutions from Australasia, North America, Asia and the U.K. An outstanding group of speakers has been arranged but there will be an opportunity at the end of both days for individuals to speak in an informal session.
Optional side visits to cultural institutions in Sydney and Melbourne will be possible depending on numbers.

SPEAKERS
An excellent cross section of speakers have agreed to present papers from institutions such as the Melbourne Museum, National Museum of Australia, Te Papa (NZ), Workshops Rail Museum (Ipswich QLD), Prospectors and Miners' Hall of Fame (Kalgoorlie WA), Shear Outback Australia (Hay NSW), the Science and Technology Museum (Ottawa Canada), Leon Paroissien MOCA (Taipei), Chuck Sutyla (Lords Consulting HK China), Peter Root (Roots Projects Australia, Project Managers), Richard Johnson (Johnson Pilton Walker, Architects) and David Fleming (Liverpool National Museums). Several other leading speakers still await confirmation.
LANGUAGE FOR THE CONFERENCE
All sessions will be presented in English. If there are a sufficient number of requests, simultaneous translation in French may be available..
