Description: | The cigar tin consists of a rectangular tin box, to which is hinged a tin lid. The tin is painted gold. The lid is beige and gold, and on it is printed a number of designs: The Henri Wintermans logo, which consists of a gold lion on a red background, a cup of coffee to indicate the café crème flavour, and a lighted cigarillo. The inside of the lid contains the same designs, only brown on a beige background. Inside the tin is a paper label which provides additional information about the Café Crème product. |
Narrative: | Henri Wintermans began his cigar-making enterprise with his brother, Sjaak, in 1904. By 1934, the company had come to dominate the Dutch domestic market, and Henri split from his brother and established a factory at Eersel, where he would concentrate on the export market. Café Crème cigarillos were first produced in the early 1960s, and quickly became the best-selling cigarillos in the world. The tin is one of many similar containers from a wide variety of tobacco products held at the Torbay museum. |
History of Use: | These cigarillos were purchased and smoked in approximately 1975. |
